Summer 2018 Intern - Coal Combusion Engineering Implementation (East Bend Station)

The Coal Combustion Products (CCP) team provides strategic leadership to effectively manage coal ash storage in a manner that mitigates any hazard to public health, safety, or welfare and ensures the ongoing safety of our communities and environment. The team delivers solutions that address net environmental impact and balance stakeholder interests. Specifically, the team develops closure strategies, develops closure plans, and executes major projects to move ash to permanent storage solutions and ultimately close coal combustion residuals (CCR) impoundments in compliance with Federal and state legislation.  Interns support Project Managers who are responsible for the individual ash basin closure projects. Interns may also assist management with overseeing construction, design, and other compliance and permitting related activities.

 

As part of the Coal Combustion Products (CCP) team, key duties for the Intern will include:

 

  • Assisting the Project Managers with all phases of project planning and execution to ensure all project success factors are met, including but not limited to scope, schedule, cost, quality, environmental, safety, communications, security, and integration.
  • Assisting the Project Managers with implementing the ash basin closure Project Execution Plan (PEP) while ensuring that all Project objectives are met or exceeded for safety, environmental, quality, schedule, cost, configuration management, integration, etc.  
  • Assisting the Project Manager’s with all phases of project planning and execution including managing Project baselines for scope, schedule, cost, quality, communications, security, and integration and will help manage the CCP Ash Basin Closure Project effectively.
  • Supporting the overall CCP Department objective to drive incidents to ZERO!
  • Understanding the Project Execution Plan and ensure compliance.
  • Understanding schedule variances and report any discrepancies to the Project Manager.
  • Performing and documenting frequent field observations and walk downs to ensure Project success.
  • Assisting Project Managers with providing or arranging the site safety orientations as required for the CCP staff and contractors
  • Attending daily pre-job briefs with contingent workers.
  • Understanding and enforcing Site Security guidelines
  • Assisting and supporting Project Manager with Project Management related meetings. Attending on-site staff meetings and performing administrative duties for on-site staff needs
  • Communicating clearly and effectively

 

This Intern position is for students pursuing degrees in undergraduate or graduate studies in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Construction Management . In addition to working within your discipline, you may be asked to work across a multi-engineering discipline platform.

 

Specific Requirements : Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

 

Working Conditions:  

  • Office and plant environment - requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, and occasional exposure to temperature and noise.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled and pursuing a four-year degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering (Non-Technology) from an ABET Accredited College or University or Construction Management
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75
  • Must not graduate prior to December 2018

  • Valid driver’s license

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Sophomore to Master’s classification
  • Previous experience working as an intern or co-op
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in use of computers, software, and engineering applications
  • Demonstrated time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated history of achievements and personal performance
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making
  • Works effectively with others from diverse backgrounds to solve problems and implement solutions
