The North Carolina Department of Commerce is the state's lead agency for economic, community and workforce development. The Department works with local, regional, national and international organizations to fulfill its mission to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) regulates the rates and services of about 3,000 public utilities in North Carolina to include electric, telephone (including pay phone service and shared tenant service), natural gas, water, wastewater, electric resale, household goods transportation, buses, brokers, and ferryboats. The Commission is also responsible for administering programs in North Carolina to ensure the safety of natural gas pipelines.  The Information Technology Department of the NCUC is charged with the responsibility of providing all computer and network related functions, including the website and Docket Management System, that is used heavily by the utility company personnel and their attorneys.

The Systems Administrator position provides system and network administration and support through: assessing, implementing, and troubleshooting server, application, hardware, and desktop updates, upgrades, and patches; and managing and supporting servers, hosts, and firewalls, including an internal email server separate from the ITS statewide system.  

This position manages multiple servers, Active Directory and Exchange, server reports, logs and documents; maintain schedules and calendars for system and hardware upgrade/maintenance; development and maintenance of departmental technical documentation; installs and configures any service application required to meet NCUC business needs and ensures those applications are secure, and is responsible for planning, testing new technology, assisting with help desk duties and other duties as assigned.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:

Demonstrated experience:
  • supporting a complex VMware environment
  • implementing and managing SAN technologies
  • managing a Microsoft Windows Server environment including network services, Active Directory (forest and domain trust, operation master roles, group policy design)
  • supporting server and system technologies, and of the configuration and operation of hardware and software associated
  • troubleshooting and resolving network, hardware, and software problems through advanced system analysis
  • designing, maintaining, repairing, and upgrading network and computer systems
  • researching technology to improve organizational network needs and solve complicated networking and infrastructure issues
Considerable Knowledge of:
  • Exchange Server
Management Preferences
Experience or working knowledge of:

  • EMC SAN & Data Domain
  • MS Windows Server 2008 and above
  • Meraki firewalls/switches

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and three years of experience in System Administration; or a Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in System Administration; or a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering and two years of experience in System Administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**All degrees must be from Appropriately Accredited Institutions.

NOTE: This is a Career-Banded position. Recruitment for this position will target the Journey level of the Technology Support Specialist class. Salary will be commensurate with the applicant's competencies, as well as, the budget, equity, and market conditions. This position is considered to be equivalent to salary grade 77.
