Wildlife Technician

The Idaho Panhandle National Forests anticipates filling one Biological Technician (Wildlife) position, GS-0404-06/07 in the near future. This position would be a permanent seasonal employee and would be guaranteed 18 payperiods of full-time work.   The position will be located at the Sandpoint Ranger District in Sandpoint, Idaho.  This position offers a challenging career opportunity for an individual seeking experience on a busy and complex forest. The position is located on the Sandpoint Ranger District and performs wildlife biological technician duties as part of the North Zone Wildlife Organization. 

Major duties: 

  •  Completes all necessary field work (including habitat assessments and species surveys) needed as part of the baseline/analysis for timber management projects and other projects as assigned.  

  • Conducts inventory and monitoring surveys for species outside of project areas, as assigned, including but not limited to bald eagles, black swift, harlequin duck, Coeur d’Alene salamander,  and grizzly bear remote cameras/DNA corrals. 

  • Compiles information and data on the existing condition of the Bear Management Units on the North Zone for inclusion in the annual report to the Fish and Wildlife Service. 

  • Maintains NRIS Wildlife database and oversees data entry of wildlife observations and surveys into the database. Assist with completion of WIT Accomplishments reporting. 

  • Supervisor for the seasonal wildlife technicians working on the North Zone. Provides guidance, day to day direction, logistical support and oversight for seasonal employees.  Establishes and communicates guidelines and performance requirements to employees as well as conducts formal performance reviews.  

  • Participates with biologists in planning work and will contribute productive ideas on uses of materials and methods. Improves, adapts and develops techniques, procedures, and equipment based on detailed practical knowledge and broad experience. Changes study procedures and data collection in accordance with conditions found in order to provide clear, concise recommendations, which will improve habitat and condition of various
species.  

  • Provides detailed reports on work methods, data collected and
project evaluation.  

  • Uses personal computer systems and
associated software for recording, storing and analyzing data. Programs regularly used include the Microsoft Office Suite as well as the ArcGIS Platform. 

  • Candidates are expected to be willing to work where needed as well as perform other duties as assigned. 

  • The work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, recurring bending, stooping, reaching, or similar activities. 

  • Work is performed in a forest environment where terrain is often steep, uneven, rocky, and covered with thick vegetation, and where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature.
