Golden Paintbrush Recovery Internships

The Institute for Applied Ecology (https://appliedeco.org/) will hire up to three interns this year for field work focused on monitoring populations of the threatened golden paintbrush (Castilleja levisecta) in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The interns will also have the opportunity to sample for Bradshaw’s lomatium (Lomatium bradshawii), Kincaid’s lupine (Lupinus oreganus), and Nelson’s checkermallow (Sidalcea nelsoniana) in Benton County. These paid positions are intended to provide field experience to individuals considering conservation biology or restoration ecology as a career, while contributing directly to the conservation and recovery of rare species. The majority of time will be spent visiting sites where the species have been intentionally reintroduced and monitoring the populations to estimate the total population size. The work will involve walking, hiking, stooping, kneeling, carrying medium to light loads, recording data, entering data into computers, and other associated tasks. The positions are based in Corvallis, Oregon with field work throughout the Willamette Valley. These internships will be from April 16 through June 22, 2018.

Qualifications:
* Interest in conservation biology, restoration ecology, and botany
* Plant identification skills (or enthusiastic willingness to learn)
* Research experience
* Ability to navigate off-trail using GPS
* Attention to detail
* Ability to work long hours in hot, dry and cold, wet conditions with potential for exposure to poison oak, including having appropriate field gear for conditions
* Ability to walk, hike, stoop, kneel, carry medium to light loads

Compensation: $11.00/hr, paid monthly. Housing in Corvallis is not provided.

TO APPLY: Applications should be compiled into a single PDF document and emailed to jobs@appliedeco.org no later than Friday, January 26th, 2018. In the subject line, write: “Golden Paintbrush Field Intern Application (Monitoring)”.

Include a letter of interest stating when you will be available to start work (this is a MUST), resume, transcripts (unofficial is fine), and the names and contact information for three references. AT LEAST ONE reference must be from a supervisor from a work experience.

Note: Due to the short duration of the flowering season for golden paintbrush, applicants who are unavailable for the period April 16 through June 22 will not be considered.

If you are applying to more than one position at IAE, you will need to submit applications to specific postings in separate e-mails.

INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Non-U.S. residents must also include a copy of their work visa. Applications will be considered upon receipt. Please direct all inquiries to jobs@appliedeco.org.
