Strategic Sourcing Manager

THE COMPANY

The Company is a multi-billion dollar global manufacturer of consumer products with multiple manufacturing facilities located in North and South America.

 

THE POSITION

The Strategic Sourcing Manager will be responsible for identifying and leading projects designed to significantly improve the Company’s cost structure.  The projects are transformational in nature, so will require strategic thinking, effective problem structuring, and an ability to influence diverse teams.  A direct amount of sourcing for this executive will be focused on the company’s Indirect (MRO and CAPEX) and New Programs spend.  Reports to the VP, Procurement.

 

The Strategic Sourcing Manager will work through a team of both direct reports and matrixed representatives from corporate functions.  The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional and field leadership to determine adequate product/service specs and drive compliance with the field and functions in order to achieve said targets.

 

Success will be measured based on:

  • For procurement: spend addressed, savings achieved and working capital impact (supplier payment terms).

  • For special projects: projects identified and impact delivered.  Prioritization of the most meaningful opportunities and the ability to work cross-functionally is critical to success.

 

Specific Responsibilities

Strategic Sourcing (New Model)

  • Define and implement Global Sourcing strategies for all major categories aimed at achieving net cost savings as well as mitigating raw material inflation near term.

  • Track and report customer deliverables to support build events and Start of Production requirements (i.e. prototype, off-tool/off-process timing, etc.).

  • Establish global spend visibility to clearly define category spend baselines, current suppliers and track go-forward impact.

  • Interface with Finance and Cost Planning Group to link Sourcing savings with budget.

  • Sourcing strategies will include volume aggregation, competitive bidding, low cost country sourcing, eAuctions, should-cost models, raw material indexed contracts, “preferred supplier” programs, identification of new suppliers, demand management, policy/controls and make vs. buy.

  • Develop/refine sourcing strategy and enhance capabilities to support achievement of overall net cost savings objective through new model sourcing activities.

  • Deploy more sophisticated supplier management including quarterly supplier business reviews, annual supplier conferences, “preferred supplier” designation, qualification of new suppliers, etc.

 

 

Organization

  • Lead a team of buyers and analysts that are responsible for all new model sourcing and performance, and indirect procurement, establish rigorous internal performance management system, including team and individual-level targets, scorecards and monthly tracking.

  • Achieve early wins to build organizational confidence and momentum.

  • Ability to grow team going forward based on demonstrated impact.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Working knowledge of new programs, cost modeling around working capital is highly desirable.

  • Make budgetary recommendations on production and expense expenditures, and master scheduling for project related activities.  Champion a clear channel of communication and coordination between functional counterparts in the business units.

  • Ensure that effective business unit systems, procedures and financial controls are established and maintained for the business unit’s operations.

 

Qualifications

  • Several years’ experience in Sourcing/Procurement leadership at an Engineered Products Manufacturing Company.

  • Extensive experience with NPI/development process and have the ability to establish early visibility of the requirements.

  • Ability to build strong working relationships with Engineering and be involved in the preliminary design stage.

  • Experience with category management and multi-step strategic sourcing processes in a range of categories.

  • Skilled negotiator.

  • Experience with leveraged agreements, multi-year contracts, and should-cost models.

  • Highly results-oriented and focused on business priorities with a successful record of accomplishments.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills – able to identify problems and/or opportunities for improvement and assesses viable solutions.  Develop and execute comprehensive action plans.

  • Excellent supplier relationship management skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments concurrently, including ability to assess and manage priorities.

  • Effective communications skills, particularly the ability to communicate technical expertise.

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.  Must be able to build rapport with Operations and cross-functional colleagues, and be able to foster collaborative relationships.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent management experience.

  • APICS/NAPM, CPIM or CPM certification or equivalent preferred.
