The Opportunity:  The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Environmental Services Office is seeking to fill the position of Wildlife Biologist in Olympia, WA. This position supports the habitat connectivity activities of the Fish and Wildlife Program.
 
This position will perform the following work:

  • Installs and maintains remote wildlife camera traps in the field, processes images, and creates data summaries in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Conducts GIS mapping and analysis to support habitat connectivity activities.
  • Completes quality control on data for the wildlife vehicle collision database, evaluates existing structures using the Passage Assessment System, and assists with project work such as fish moving, or completing Programmatic Biological Assessments.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions (e.g., hot, cold, rain, snow) for up to ten hours a day, on uneven rough terrain, unstable ground, in dense vegetation, along roadsides and in remote locations, and along streams and wet areas with exposure to biting insects, common plant toxins, construction equipment, noise, traffic and other hazards.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in wildlife biology, zoology, ecology, environmental science, or equivalent degree,
  • A minimum of 12 months experience with wildlife camera trap installation, maintenance, image processing, and data analysis and the production of reports and data summaries.
  • A minimum of 12 months Geographic Information Systems experience, including making maps and completing analyses such as kernel density and hot spot analyses.
  • Experience in identifying images of Washington State wildlife.
  • Experience applying the Passage Assessment System analysis tools to bridges and culverts.
  • A valid driver's license.
 
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
