Geodetic Field Engineer - TE3

The Opportunity:  The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Headquarters' Survey and Mapping Office, located in Tumwater, WA is looking for a Geodetic Field Engineer. This office is a specialty statewide cost recovery center and is responsible for the development and maintenance of the geographic framework that provides the up to date statewide datum reference for WSDOT project delivery. They establish geodetic survey control, bathymetric, photogrammetric and Terrestrial Lidar (3DTL) as built mapping technology and structural monitoring for WSDOT project delivery.
 
This position will serve as the Geodetic Field Engineer providing technical field expertise for geodetic, photogrammetric, bathymetric, and LiDAR specialty control, mapping, and monitoring surveys and directs the efficient function of field parties on extensive statewide survey activities.
 
The incumbent should be proficient with computer applications and survey instruments. Statewide travel will be required with overnight stays up to 80% of the year. If you are independent, detail oriented, organized with initiative and enjoy working with new technology we'd like to talk to you.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Researching and recovering existing geodetic control, provide leadership for statewide high precision survey data collection, insure quality and completeness of data for survey tasks.
  • Exercising specialized knowledge in procurement and operation of Global Positioning System (GPS) static, fast static, and real-time kinematic equipment (including WSRN), as well as terrestrial geodetic and mapping instrumentation such as robotic total stations for control traverses, digital bar code high precision leveling for NGS published elevation data, GPS-referenced fathometer data for bathymetry and classical topographic.
  • Implement new technology, techniques, specifications, procedures, and internal policies by applying education and experience.
  • Provide technical guidance for statewide managers and personnel, as well as Survey Office staff, of pertinent aspects of control networks for highway design and mapping.
  • Trains crew members, Region staff, consultant staff, and outside entities involved with Survey office projects.
  • Efficiently navigates with written descriptions, maps of all scales, aerial photography, and GPS-oriented scrolling digital maps.
  • Other duties as required.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • One (1) year as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of geodetic survey and one year of global positioning experience.
  • Formal knowledge of statewide survey geodetic, photogrammetric, bathymetric, classical topographic, and terrestrial LiDAR mapping activities.
  • Ability to schedule professional engineering and surveying tasks, manage the research and recovery of existing geodetic control and collection of high precision horizontal and vertical data for new geodetic and mapping networks.
  • Exercises specialized expert knowledge in procurement and operation of Global Positioning System (GPS) static, fast static, and real-time kinematic equipment, and the application of the Washington State Real Time Network (communication issues, etc) including terrestrial geodetic instrumentation such as robotic total stations and digital bar code high precision levels.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day over uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions alongside of the highway next to fast moving traffic.
  • Working knowledge and use of Microstation and Inroads.
  • Ability to assist in moving up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to travel statewide approximately 80% of the year.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license.
 
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
