Design Engineer – Transportation Engineer 2

The Opportunity:
 
WSDOT is currently looking for an enthusiastic engineer who has a passion for creative solutions, innovation, and enjoys working in a high-performing team as part of a blended WSDOT/Consultant team. The SR 167 Completion Project Office in Tumwater is currently seeking to fill a Transportation Engineer 2 position. The SR 167 Completion Project is part of the larger Puget Sound Gateway Program funded through Connecting Washington with a total Program budget of approximately $1.87 billion. This position will be responsible for the preparation of Plans, Specifications, Estimates and/or Request for Qualifications & Request for Proposals Design-Build packages for multiple highway design and construction projects. The future incumbent will play a pivotal role in meeting the agency's goals. Work assignments are designed with professional development in mind.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Develop, produce, and review Plans, Specifications, and Estimates.
  • Develop, produce, and review RFQ/RFP packages.
  • Perform CADD and drafting work in support of project delivery on various design elements in accordance to WSDOT standards.
  • Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.
  • Interpret data, identify problems and develop solutions using sound engineering judgment and guidelines on complicated transportation projects.
  • Effectively utilize design software to develop designs, which includes horizontal and vertical alignments, channelization, drainage, geometrics, and right of way boundaries.
  • Provide technical training and mentoring to team members.
  • Communicate with other WSDOT offices, consultant staff, outside agencies, and the public to obtain and share information as necessary to support the project.
  • Travel to project sites for field reviews.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles and mathematic formulas.
  • The ability to read, interpret, understand, review and produce contract plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Strong communication skills both in the written and verbal form.
  • Knowledge and understanding of contractor/owner relationships and basic contract law.
  • Skills related to computer applications involving transportation engineering, databases, word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering or related field in Washington State is preferred.
 
Note:
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
