Summer General Internships

(Contact Internship and Career Advisor about academic credit eligibility)

Creative Nonfiction’s general internship offers

outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate

individuals the opportunity to learn new skills while providing experience working in the realm of literary publishing. Because our office is small, interns often can become involved with various projects and gain an understanding of all aspects of running an independent literary organization.

Typical tasks include managing incoming submissions, corresponding with writers and subscribers, filling customer orders, basic office tasks, fact-checking and research, data management, and a variety of other tasks that vary depending on current CNF projects. Please note: Much of the work performed by our interns and volunteers is not glamorous, but is vital.
We value quality of work over quickness, but interns and volunteers should have the ability to multitask, work between multiple projects, and change directions often. Applicants should display strong research skills, an attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and creativity.
We offer one or two unpaid internships during summer semester and require at least a 20 hour-per-week commitment. We can generally work with interns to schedule around other jobs or commitments.

Prospective candidates should have at least completed their junior year of college; applicants are encouraged to work with their school to get credit.

By the end of your time, you should expect to have
  • developed skill competencies specific to a small literary publication
  • expanded your written communication skills
  • learned about the contemporary publishing industry
  • seen various stages of making a magazine issue, from conception to publication
  • had hands-on experience with in-house events, web layout, and social media
  • gained experience using Excel, Hootsuite, and Mail Merge

The Creative Nonfiction Foundation is a private not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and welcomes all qualified applicants, regardless of gender, race, age, sexuality, or disability.

During their internship, they have access to
--all the coffee and tea you can drink
--refrigerator space and use of a microwave
--office space to work and occasional computer access
--a creative nonfiction email account
--our in-house workshops (as space permits)
