Unimin is looking for a dynamic Coating Scientist who will have a positive impact on the Research & Development team at its Spruce Pine, NC location. As a Coating Scientist you will conduct research and manage projects related to coatings applications as defined by the research plan. Provide technical support for existing and new mineral filler products and maintain the paint and coatings laboratory.

The successful incumbent will have the following Key Responsibilities:
* Manage research projects on existing and new mineral fillers for paint and coatings applications or other specialty mineral product applications.
* Provide technical assistance to support Technical Sales, Sales, and Marketing with customer matters related to paint and coatings applications and specialty minerals products.
* Maintain Unimin’s Coating Applications Laboratory at the MRL and expand its capabilities to meet the needs of new research and development projects and technical services.
* Document research and technical services in Unimin laboratory notebooks in accordance with R& D policies.
* Communicate research methods, analysis, and findings in formal reports and invention disclosures.
* Initiate and coordinate outside application testing and sample preparation to supplement in-house R&D efforts.
* Engage in tech-to-tech interactions with customers in collaboration with Technical Sales.
* Participate in ad hoc work teams as needed, such as the Paint Work Team.
* Provide technical service and support as needed to R&D in areas other than mineral fillers for paint and coatings.
* Assist with research projects and technical services related to plastics.
* Keep up to date on technologies related to paint and coatings applications, especially regarding mineral fillers.
* Learn about our customers, our business, and the industrial minerals industry to propose future directions for research and development, especially regarding paint and coatings.
