 Job Description

This is a Medical Laboratory Technologist II position that provides full-time clinical support for the Mycobacteriology laboratory in the Microbiology Unit. 

 This position is responsible for specimen processing, culture set-up and examination, bright-field and fluorescent microscopy per laboratory protocol. The successful candidate will process sputum, blood, stool and other clinical specimens and perform tests that aid in the identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other mycobacteria species using conventional and molecular methods. 

This position provides training to other staff and is cross-trained to perform the functions of other positions within the Mycobacteriology laboratory to provide scheduling flexibility and critical backup support. 

The work involves the use of manual and automated methods and instrumentation, pipetting and extensive use of computers all while working within a high containment laboratory, i.e. BSL-3.  

This position involves repetitious tasks and tasks requiring manual dexterity. Working independently and with a team is required. The candidate is required to perform hands-on maintenance, repairs, and trouble-shooting when necessary. The work also involves the application of comprehensive quality assurance protocols and activities.

Degree Requirements (please read!): You must meet one of the following categories to be considered. This is a federal requirement for our laboratory positions.

•           I have an MD or DO and am licensed to practice medicine in NC.

•           I have a doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.

•           I have master’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.

•           I have a bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, medical technology, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.

•           I have an associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.

•           I have education and training equivalent to an associate’s degree that includes 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that includes at least 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR at least 24 hours of science courses that include 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of chemistry, biology, and medical technology in any combination.
