Urban Planning Intern
Internship Overview
Community Solutions (CS) is looking for a summer intern to support our work in North Hartford. The intern will work full-time, 35-40 hours per week, starting in early June through the end of the summer. This internship offers a $2,000 stipend for the summer as well as multiple training and educational opportunities.
The North Hartford Partnership team is currently implementing a strategy to combat housing insecurity in the North Hartford Promise Zone area. The strategy is rooted in the premise that housing insecurity is a precursor to homelessness and that by stabilizing housing the organization is building wealth for the community.
The Urban Planning Intern will be responsible for supporting the day to day project management of place-based initiatives to begin the work to stabilize housing. The Urban Planning Intern will work directly with the project leaders to engage with the local community and to help manage resources to sustain the effort over time. S/he will work closely with CS colleagues to further create best practices to advance community development goals while improving options and outcomes for vulnerable populations served by the projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Working directly with the team leaders on the North Hartford Partnership team, assist in the specific tasks related to gathering data, analyzing data, research, and planning interventions around specific initiatives.
At the direction of the Housing Director, will refine and analyze the data gathered from the Neighborhood Conditions Survey and co-develop visuals to present in addition to collecting any additional data points.
Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
Other Duties
Provide administrative assistance to the North Hartford Partnership Team as needed (copying, file organization, preparation of meeting materials)
Skills Needed
Currently studying Urban Planning or have an Urban Planning Background
Be comfortable with interacting with a wide array of groups
Familiarity with collection of data and understand best practices
Familiarity and understanding with ARC GIS or similar mapping database
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the intern is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear.
The position requires extensive computer use so the intern must have sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen.
The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Lunch meetings with CS employees, paid for by Community Solutions, to learn about the employees’ roles within the organization, the projects/programs they oversee, and how their work contributes to CS’ mission

Regular check-ins with Supervisor for feedback and guidance
Work environment
This position is located in North Hartford. The office is not an average work office and will require meetings with a wide array of partners ranging from City Officials to Community Leaders. There may be times where you are asked to attend evening community meetings, however, you will never be asked to attend by yourself.
