Data Analysis Intern, Real Estate and Community Development
Summary:
Community Solutions (CS) is looking for a summer intern to support our Inspiring Places team’s work in New York City. The intern will work full-time, 35-40 hours per week, starting in early June through the end of the summer. This internship offers a $2,000 stipend for the summer as well as multiple training and educational opportunities.
The Inspiring Places (IP) team manages the pre-development and development of real estate projects in Brownsville, NY and Northeast Hartford, CT. The projects are all grounded in Community Solutions' goal of assisting community residents in re-vitalizing the Brownsville and Northeast Hartford neighborhood through 1) creating more and better access to education, job training, and placement, 2) diversifying the neighborhood's limited housing stock and retail options to disrupt its dense pockets of poverty and low income housing, and 3) implementing projects that promote equitable neighborhood development without displacement, and catalyze projects that improve the built environment.
The Real Estate and Community Development Data Analysis Intern will support the Inspiring Places Brownsville team to collect and synthesize community data to support its resident engagement strategies specific to its public housing improvement campaign and the launch of its new Brownsville Community Land Trust. The intern will contribute to studies and presentations that are integral to the reporting of IP’s monthly outcomes for its various community development initiatives. The Real Estate and Community Development Data Analysis Intern will also embark on an area-wide real estate assessment of all vacant, distressed and foreclosed properties in Brownsville/Ocean Hill to inventory for the new Brownsville Community Land Trust, and devise a redevelopment strategy for their long-term preservation as permanent affordable housing and/or open space.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
At the direction of the Neighborhood Redevelopment & Placemaking Manager, the Intern will help collect and synthesized real estate data and community surveys in support of CS’s community engagement and advocacy projects with local stakeholders.
Administer and execute in all tasks related to data collection, surveying, inventory, and data analyzation related to community-based development projects for presentation to CS staff, community stakeholders and funders in support of its real estate and equitable development work in Brownsville.
Assist with distribution of data findings and other outreach materials among various online channels including Community Solution’s community data portal for Brownsville, social media, e-newsletters, and other electronic platforms
Support other development and placemaking projects as needed
Other Duties:
Provide administrative assistance to the Inspiring Places team as needed (copying, file organization, preparation of meeting materials)
Attend all community meetings and engagement forums relevant to reporting of the community data
Required Skills & Qualities:
Ability to conduct in-depth research on new real estate investments, and relevant city and state housing policy initiatives that may impact the development landscape in Brownsville
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to successfully manage multiple projects
Familiarity with programming languages for data analysis, mapping and online applications: SQL, python, and HTML
Experience with mapping and GIS analysis: ArcGIS, ArcScene, and Carto
Experience with Microsoft Office, G Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp
Passion for revitalizing distressed neighborhoods and helping communities to solve complex social problems

Lunch meetings with CS employees, paid for by Community Solutions, to learn about the employees’ roles within the organization, the projects/programs they oversee, and how their work contributes to CS’ mission

Regular check-ins with Supervisor for feedback and guidance
Work Environment:
This position is located in New York City, specifically the Brooklyn Office in Brownsville and will require time spent in the community.
