Outdoor Environmental Education Intern

The Outdoor Education (OED) Program runs from March 26th through June 8th, 2018. To qualify for this position, you must be able to work at least those dates. There may be opportunities to work in alternative areas or departments prior to or after the OED Program.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Outdoor Education Director, Outdoor Education Instructors (Interns) will teach outdoor education classes, develop curriculum, perform organization tasks, communicate with schools and school leaders, and assist in any projects or tasks that better the Outdoor Education Program. Should you choose to stay on through the winter, we have positions available in Family Programs and other departments--we also run an Outdoor Education program in the spring!

Please note, while this is based on the regular Outdoor Environmental Education Instructor position, we may be able adapt it to fit your college or university’s internship requirements. We strongly recommend applying at least six months prior to start date if you are seeking college credit in conjunction with this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Participate in Outdoor Education training.
  • Start/end dates are flexible, however, you must be able to work for at least the full Outdoor Education Season from mid-March 2018 through early June, 2018.
  • Be working towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science, Environmental Studies, Biology, or similar area of study.
  • Must possess a valid, USA state issued driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and comply with YMCA driving rules to be approved to operate YMCA vehicles.
  • Have experience and enjoy working with children.
  • Ability to work as a team member and coordinate with other staff in contributing to the goals of the program
  • Support the Association safety program. Promote safe work practices and a safe environment for guests, members and staff.

  • Promote a cooperative, positive and problem-solving atmosphere at all times.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others in a diverse environment.
  • Possess and maintain certification in CPR and Wilderness First Aid.
  • Be able to carry up to 40 pounds and hike up to 6 miles on uneven terrain each day.
  • Meet acceptable criminal background check standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plan, develop, and implement curriculum and activities to build on the current curriculum.
  • Contribute to a maintained, clean, and organized staff area.
  • Adhere to all weekly scheduled activities and classes.
  • Support the Association safety program. Promote safe work practices and a safe environment for guests, members and staff.
