Engineering Geology Staff - TE Intern

Note: This position is anticipated to last for 3-6 months.
 
The Opportunity:  
 
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Engineering Geology Section is seeking to fill a Transportation Engineer Intern position. The position, which is located in Tumwater will work within the Unstable Slope Management program, performing field and office work related to inventory, assessment, and scoping of various unstable slopes and related constructed geotechnical assets on a statewide basis.

This position will perform the following work:
  • Provides engineering geology support to the Unstable Slopes Unit.
  • Researches the Unstable Slope Management System (USMS) and other WSDOT databases, geotechnical design reports, and as-built construction documents.
  • Compile information into organized files and prepare various maps using GIS.
  • Field inventory and perform condition assessments of constructed geotechnical assets.
  • Provide assistance to members of the Engineering Geology Construction and Design Unit on various field and analytic tasks.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have/be:
  • A current geological sciences student going into their senior year, or a 2018 recent graduate with a bachelor's or master's degree in the geological sciences.
  • Coursework in engineering geology and geologic field mapping.
  • The ability to travel statewide with overnight stays.
  • The ability to complete work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to work outside in adverse conditions over rough terrain, and potentially at heights or in confined spaces.
  • A valid driver's license.
 
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
