Geodetic Technician - Transportation Technician 3 (In-Training)

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Headquarters' Survey and Mapping Office, located in Tumwater, WA is seeking an experienced candidate to fill the vacancy of Geodetic Technician – Transportation Technician 3 (In-Training). This position serves as an instrument operator, survey party member and technical expert for geodetic, photogrammetric, bathymetric, LiDAR, specialty control, mapping, and monitoring surveys statewide. This position will also act as liaison for the Geodetic Survey Office and its customers, both internal and external to WSDOT.

The HQ Survey and Mapping Office is a specialty statewide cost recovery center. The office is responsible for the development and maintenance of the geographic framework that provides the up to date statewide datum reference for WSDOT project delivery, establishing geodetic survey control, bathymetric, photogrammetric and Three Dimensional Terrestrial Lidar (3DTL) as built mapping technology and structural monitoring for WSDOT project delivery.
 
Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Technician 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:
 
Transportation Technician 2: $44,400 - $59,724 annually depending on qualifications.
Transportation Technician 3: $50,292 - $67,584 annually depending on qualifications.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Serves as instrument operator for primary and secondary horizontal control.
  • Operations include static and fast static GPS equipment in an independent manner using judgment based on experience.
  • Operates other equipment such as high precision digital bar code level and calibrated rods used for obtaining elevations that are published with the National Geodetic Survey.
  • Operates robotic total station for structural monitoring operations, terrestrial LiDAR scanning, classical traverse, bathymetric and topo functions.
  • Prepares and surveys photogrammetric control targets and panels.
  • Compiles, calculate and submits completed survey data to GeoMetrix Survey and Mapping office.
  • Researches, schedules routes and recovers existing geodetic control statewide.
  • Responsible for maintaining and calibrating survey equipment and accessories, monument production vehicle, materials, tools, and other related equipment.
  • Acts as a crew chief, directing daily field operations.
  • Writes descriptions, leveling, traverse, and other field notes; assists in making job site calculations,
  • Trains crewmembers, region staff, consultant staff, and outside entities involved with Survey office projects.
  • Acts as a liaison for the Survey and Mapping Office and its customers, both internal and external to WSDOT.
  • Performs other duties as required.
 
Position Requirements:
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day over uneven terrain and in adverse weather conditions alongside of the highway next to fast moving traffic.
  • Ability to travel statewide approximately 80% of the year.
  • Ability to assist in moving up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Two years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
  • Two years' experience as a member of a survey crew.
  • Knowledge and skills to operate and maintain high precision geodetic and classical survey equipment and accessories including adjusting or calibrate leveling rods end tribrachs.
  • Working knowledge needed to collect, download, process, and inspect electronic geodetic and classical survey data.
  • Working knowledge of geodetic and classical surveying principles, procedures, and techniques.

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
