Animal Resources Internship

Department: Zoology
Intern Title: Animal Resources Intern
Purpose: To gain experience with animal handling/demonstration/husbandry. Ensures that animal facilities are appropriately cared for and maintained as well as conducts regularly scheduled animal-based educational programs for Museum guests. Upon completion of internship, intern should feel competent in all basic aspects of animal care and animal-based education programming at CMC.
Background: The Animal Resources Department at CMC provides animals for daily animal demonstrations in the Museum as well as birthday parties, Scout programs, Programs on Wheels outreach programs and overnights. The department also maintains exhibits in the Museum for the public to view.
Location: Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal – 1301 Western Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203
Key Responsibilities:
Daily:
·        Assist the Animal Resources department in caring for several species of local snakes, turtles and mammals, as well as local and exotic fish and invertebrates
·        Assist the Animal Resources department in conduction animal-based educational programs for Museum visitors of all ages and education backgrounds
Weekly:
·        Master the skills necessary to care for one of our captive species
·        Educate a diverse audience about one of our captive species
Requirements:
·        Currently enrolled in an undergraduate Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Animal Husbandry, Zoo Science or related program
·        Foster a sincere interest in pursuing a career in animal care
·        Be a team player with excellent organizational skills
·        Maintain discipline to complete task independently
·        Must possess strong communication and customer service skills to effectively present animal-based programming to diverse audiences, and to communicate with coworkers.
Reports To: Ann Wegman - Animal Resources Coordinator
Length of Appointment: 10 weeks (or less for spring – can customize to needs)
Time Commitment: 20 hours a week

Eligible candidates considering an internship are defined as individuals who meet one or more of the following criteria:
  • currently enrolled as an undergraduate student
  • have graduated within the past year
  • are currently enrolled in graduate school
