Horticulture, Plant Science, Biomechanics, Bio & Ag Engineering summer internships

UK Research Experience for Undergraduates
Summer Fellowship 2020

Full Time
Stipend: $6,400
Duration: May 18 – Aug 07 (12 weeks)
For students majoring in: Horticulture, Plant Science, Mechanical Engineering, Bio & Ag Engineering, Computer Science, & Related Degrees.

The department of Horticulture is seeking undergraduate students for full-time research positions this summer, 2020. You will join an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers.

Project Description:

The project is focused on researching the causes of stalk lodging in corn and sorghum (snapping of corns talks before harvest). Stalk lodging is a major agricultural problem resulting in up to 20% yield loss for farmers. The research seeks to understand the complex relationship between plant genetics, environmental conditions, phenotypic expressions and corn stalk biomechanics and their interaction on lodging resistance. Students will have the opportunity to conduct independent research in the following areas and present their work at the end of the summer in a poster or oral presentation.

Individual Areas of Research
·     Genetics
·     Bioinformatics
·     Molecular Biology
·     Biomechanical Phenotyping
·     X-ray Micro CT analysis
·     Finite Element Modeling

In addition to individual projects, students will collaborate on other group projects, schedule permitting:
o  Analyzing biological samples using analytical techniques
o  Collecting and record data on plant tissues (characterizations, strength tests, genetic tests) using lab equipment
o  General laboratory upkeep (washing dishes, etc.)
o  Crop management (Potting, planting, watering, harvesting, etc.)
o  Collect and record data from the fields (UK North Farm)
